193. Stone and Tile Cabin
The new cabin, located in the Natural Park of Laguna Negra y Circos Glaciares de Urbión, takes the form of a construction with a hipped roof, sitting in the landscape like a natural architecture that has its roots in the constructive tradition of vernacular architecture from northern Soria.
The new construction is a square structure; inside, a functional perimeter surrounds a single space, also square in plan, topped with a pyramidal roof.
This formal arrangement, which aims to establish ties with the casa pinariega [traditional houses from the Pinares region] and the casa carretera [historical lodgings for cart drivers] —archetypes of traditional architecture in the area— oscillates between the domestic condition of the former and the public nature of the latter, without forgetting the contemporary condition of a construction that must be both functional and easy to maintain.
Within this organization, the main interior space accommodates public uses —information, entrances and cafeteria— and the band around the perimeter houses the windows/thresholds, restrooms, the internal cafeteria spaces, and the storage area.
The new hipped roof cabin is located among pine trees and near a large existing rock on the site, similar in size to that of the cabin. This helps the new construction adjust its scale visually to that of the natural surroundings, thus controlling the visual impact of the new architecture.
The perimeter walls of the new construction are built using recycled stone, with Corten steel sheet framing the openings.
The roofs are finished with recycled clay tiles, installed in the traditional 'monk and nun' style. The door and window frames are made of oak and Corten steel.
The entire interior is built from black Bakelite panels, and the fireplace, with a central fire pit, is black steel.
